Upon graduating from the University of Maryland in 1980 with a Bachelor degree in Family Studies, Robert was employed as a hotline phone counselor before becoming a vocational counselor for mentally and physically challenged adults. Taking a break from the helping relationship field, he started and operated a landscape business for many years before returning to the counseling field. Robert is married with one adult son and enjoys walks with his wife and dog, reading, swimming and relaxing at the beach, visiting historical places, playing tennis, racquetball, and worshiping God.

Robert has worked with individuals (depression, anxiety, grief, anger, trauma, some addictions, relationship and spiritual issues); couples (pre-marital, marital, conflict resolution, infidelity, parenting, pornography, and sexuality); and groups (men and women with a focus on healing and wellness). Volunteer positions have included lay counseling within the Christian community, crisis pregnancy counseling for a Christian-based pregnancy clinic, hospice volunteer, and Elder and Bible teacher for youth and adults in his church. He has completed the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop in suicide first aid. Robert is particularly interested in helping men develop integrity and character as husbands, fathers, and Christian leaders, and is developing competency in the area of healthy sexuality for men.

Robert uses an integrative approach to counseling that pulls from various theoretical methods that are clinically researched as effective. He may draw from Adlerian, Existential, Person-Centered, Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative, Christian Cognitive-Behavioral, and the use of the Christian twelve-step model for various life issues. For couples, he may use Hope Focused Marital Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Love Languages. With client consent, he integrates his counseling to include Jesus Christ as the ultimate Source for healing and direction. Additionally, Robert regards the importance of a multicultural perspective that respects the values and culture of each client. Robert has worked extensively across Ethnic and Racial lines using his experience in Church leadership and a strongly held value as regards the human person to effectively connect with couples and individuals.

“I respect each individual journey, wherever you are in life. We are created uniquely and we are given unique capacities for healing and growth. God is involved in the details of our lives, including counseling. He is the “Wonderful Counselor.” Because Jesus was commissioned to bring good news, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom to captives [of dysfunction and addiction], and comfort those who mourn (Isaiah 61: 1, 2), my goal is to honor the call of partnering with Him in providing these vital supports. I meet you where you are in life, and together we work on your goals to experience mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual growth. I counsel wholistically, considering your physical and environmental status, as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. I am interested, with God, in helping you to achieve a healthier state of being, a purposeful direction, and a closer walk with Jesus.”
